AI for ship building and defense

The Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have reportedly signed an MoU to build AI-based technologies for robust shipbuilding and enhanced defence sectors. The Foundation for Science Innovation and Development (FDSID) of IISc Bengaluru will be assisting the defence sector shipyard in streamlining the shipbuilding procedures, reducing the construction timelines, and uplifting the overall productivity.

FSID will be working with GSL for the next one year to streamline processes that harness the power of AI in addressing the severe challenges in shipbuilding and drive innovation in warship and weapon integration.

A GSL official mentioned, “The alliance brings together the expertise of GSL, a leader in the shipbuilding and defence industry, and IISc, Bengaluru, known for pioneering cutting-edge technological solutions.”

This partnership is expected to enhance manpower and equipment productivity, implement cutting-edge safety precautions, reinforce defence preparedness and drive indigenous defence manufacturing.

The official furthermore said, “With the implementation of AI-powered predictive analytics and real-time monitoring system, the alliance aims to ensure safer working conditions, lessen accidents and safeguard personnel assets.”

The GSL has signed various MoUs with reputed institutes as they search for multiple ways to harness and integrate AI into their manufacturing processes. GSL expects the development of advanced AI technologies will provide heightened situational awareness, empowering the country’s naval forces to stay vigilant and responsive in defence operations.

“Through localised AI development, the collaboration aims to strengthen self-reliance in defence manufacturing, contributing significantly to the nation’s strategic autonomy.”
